Syndicate ownership

Record a horse owned by a group, with each member's ownership percentage, and bill them accordingly.

Some horses are owned by a syndicate — a group of people who each hold a share. decavet captures the group as a single contact and tracks each member's ownership percentage, so you can bill the group as a whole or split charges by share.

Prerequisites: the individual members should exist as contacts (you can add them as you go).

Step 1 — Create the syndicate contact

  1. Click ContactsNew Contact.
  2. Set the category to Syndicate.
  3. Choose Business and enter the syndicate's name (e.g., "Thunder Racing Partners").
  4. Add a contact method for the syndicate manager (the person you correspond with).
  5. Click Save.

Step 2 — Add members and their shares

  1. Open the syndicate contact's detail page.
  2. Find the Syndicate members section.
  3. Click to add a member, then search for and select the member's contact.
  4. Enter that member's ownership percentage.
  5. Repeat for each member. decavet shows a running total and warns you if the percentages don't add up to 100%.
  6. Add notes per member if helpful, and save.

Step 3 — Connect the horse

  1. Open (or create) the horse's patient record.
  2. Add the syndicate as the patient's owner (the primary owner for billing). See Assign owners & care team.

Billing a syndicate

When you bill work for a syndicate-owned horse, you can keep it as one invoice to the syndicate, or split the charges by ownership percentage so each member gets their share. See Split billing.

You'll know it worked when…

The syndicate's member list totals 100%, and the horse's patient record shows the syndicate as owner.

Important: Keep ownership percentages current. If a share changes hands, update the member list before the next invoice so the split is correct.
