Add a patient
Create an animal record — including the equine sex terms decavet uses for horses.
A patient is an animal under your care. You'll usually add a patient right after creating its owner's contact.
Prerequisites: the owner's contact should exist so you can connect it (you can also do this afterward).
Steps
Click Patients in the top navigation, then New Patient — or add a patient directly from the owner's contact page.
Enter the patient's name (e.g., "Thunder").
Choose the species. For equine practices, Equine is the default; your practice can manage the list under Settings → Species.
Enter the breed if you know it.
Set the sex. For horses, decavet automatically shows the equine words:
What you mean Shown for a horse Intact male Stallion Intact female Mare Castrated male Gelding Spayed female Spayed Mare Not known Unknown For non-equine species, the generic Male / Female / Neutered / Spayed labels are used instead.
(Optional) Add the date of birth. If it's an estimate, tick estimated.
(Optional) Add color, microchip number, a patient code, and a rabies tag number.
(Optional) Add a photo.
Connect the owner — search for and select the contact who owns this animal.
(Optional) Add notes.
Click Save.
You'll know it worked when…
The patient appears in your Patients list and on the owner's contact page, with the correct equine sex label if it's a horse.
Tip: A horse owned by a group? Connect a syndicate contact as the owner instead of a single person.
